Since misery liked company, Alicia’s murder and Cordelia’s arrest weren’t the only bad things that happened in the small town of Misty Cliffs. Although it was the most tragic.

Furthermore, to be perfectly fair, this was more on the personal side for Erin. This wouldn’t shake the entire town as those previous events did, but it certainly shook Erin to the core.

As she grieved for Alicia, stressed about whether the sheriff had caught the right killer or found the easiest solution, because Cordelia continued to speak of her innocence, she also lost her will to do anything. Erin pretty much lost her will to go to work, knowing Alicia wouldn’t be there to greet her, help her out, or keep her company.

That didn’t mean she stayed home. On the contrary, she was the first who opened her shop on Seaview. She meticulously swept the street in front, scrubbed the floors within, made sure she had enough clean towels, enough snacks, because she had to face it, it wasn’t like she had anything else going on in her life. Fenix and this store were her everything at the moment.

When tragedies struck, people tended to turn inward, looking to their families, seeking solace, comfort, and security among those they loved and cared about. Erin didn’t have that here. There was no one she could go to on days like this.

She had Fenix, but that wasn’t the same. And she had Dr. Weathers, but this wasn’t one of the times a therapist could help. It simply wasn’t enough. In times like this, a person had to turn to that specific group of people you were bound to by blood and love.

At least now she had a couple of friends, she reminded herself. She wasn’t completely alone.

After going through her morning routine and opening the shop, she realized she didn’t have any appointments for the day, which made her glum mood even glummer. To make matters worse, she completely forgot to eat, and her stomach was growling like Fenix did when he saw a skunk.

Seeing no other options, she made a quick trip to the local diner to grab a quick bite to eat, this time not caring that the shop was left wide open.

About twenty minutes later, she was on her way back as her phone started ringing. It was an unknown number. In her morose state, she didn’t think of the reasons behind why that was the case before answering.

“Hello?” she greeted halfheartedly. Not even her favorite breakfast, cooked just the way she liked it, could snap her from a bad mood.

“Hello, darling,” a very familiar voice greeted her in return.

Her whole body stopped functioning for a second, and Erin stopped in the middle of the street.

“Did you miss me? I know I’ve missed you,” he continued in his usual manner, speaking almost lazily. Once upon a time, she’d found that sexy. Now it made her skin crawl.

“You’re not allowed to call me, Mark,” Erin snapped in return, finding her voice the instant she remembered being angry was far better than being scared.
